STA Award in Swimming Teaching

TheSTA Award in Swimming Teaching aims to enable candidates to gain the knowledge and understanding  that will enable them to be able to confidently teach up to 10 beginners aswell as delivering the STAnley Series of awards, as well as the Octopus and Goldfish Series of STA’s International Learn to Swim Programme.

This qualification also enables the candidates on successfully passing the course to be able to act as an assistant swimming teacher and can teach larger classes or advanced skills under the direct supervision of a swimming teacher qualified to certificate level.

In order to complete this course candidates must reach the following Pre-Requisites:

STA Certificate in Swimming Teaching

In order to complete this course candidates must reach the following Pre-Requisites:

(please note the ASA Level 1 Award in Aquatic Teaching is not an acceptable pre-requisite)

  • Teaching Swimming, Lifesaving and Survival Techniques
  • Understanding How to Develop Participants Through Coaching Sport

Baby and Pre-School

The Baby and Pre-School qualification aims to produce teachers that can teach aquatic activities, including paddle strokes to babies and pre-school children during adult and children lessons.

They are able to deliver the STA Starfish programme up to the STAnley Series of STA’s International Learn to Swim Programme.

In order to complete this course candidates must reach the following Pre-Requisites:

  • Planning, Preparing and Teaching Swimming
  • Baby and Pre-School Swimming

Student Teachers Certificate

The Student Teachers Certificate has been designed to provide preliminary training in the skills of teaching swimming for teenagers and young adults and it is a natural stepping stone to a vocational qualification in swimming.

In order to complete this course candidates must reach the following Pre-Requisites:

  • Be 13 years of age or older
  • Be able to swim 100 metres in a competent manner and be confident in deep water

20 Recommended Guided Learning Hours, .

Course content:

  • Legal, ethical, hygiene, health & safety considerations
  • Considerations for those with a disability
  • Learning, communication and teaching
  • Hydrostatics, hydrodynamics and the body system
  • Practical teachings of confidence practices
  • Front and back paddle
  • Front and back crawl and breaststroke
  • NaRS Bronze Cross Award – the theory and practical skills of water safety, basic life support and rescue skills

School Teachers Foundation Certificate

Holders of the School Teachers Foundation Certificate will be qualified to deliver school swimming lessons. This course can be delivered to Primary and Secondary School Teachers who deliver school swimming lessons.

School Teachers have prior knowledge and experience of teaching and planning lessons; therefore this certificate is designed to enable teachers to deliver National Curriculum School swimming lessons. STA understands that every school’s needs are different and have designed this certificate to give schools the opportunity to train their staff with a tailor made course to suit them.

In order to complete this course candidates must reach the following Pre-Requisites:

  • Be 16 years of age or older
  • Be a qualified teacher in education or undergoing training to become qualified, or hold an NNEB qualification
  • Hold the Safety Award for Teachers or acceptable equivalent

Course Content:

  • Teaching and Planning in a Pool Environment
  • Poolside Teaching
  • Teaching Confidence Practices and Non-Swimmers
  • One of the following optional topics, chosen by the course organiser to meet the requirements of the candidates and school:
    • Teaching Improvers and Stroke Development
    • Aquatic Activities – Water Polo, Synchronised Swimming
    • Aquatic Games / Aquatic Fun Races
    • School Galas – Set-Up, Races, Programming
    • Survival and Rescue Skills
